LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 78TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

March 16, 2003

TO:
Honorable Will Hartnett, Chair, House Committee on Judicial Affairs

FROM:
John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB1294 by Elkins (Relating to the exemption from jury service of certain persons with legal custody of a child.), As Introduced

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Government Code to exempt a person from jury service who has legal custody of a child younger than 15 years of age where service on a jury would require leaving the child without adequate supervision.  This is a change from the current law where the relevant age of the child is 10 years of age.

The bill would take effect September 1, 2003.

Local Government Impact

To the extent that local government may incur costs reprinting jury summons and questionnaires for the change authorized by the bill, the costs are not anticipated to a be a significant fiscal implication.
