No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Local Government Code to require that the competitive examination used to develop a eligibility list for a beginning position in the fire or police department in certain municipalities must be based on the person's general knowledge and aptitude. The bill would take effect September 1, 2003 and apply to entrance examinations administered on or after that date.

Under current statute, the exam must be based on knowledge of and qualifications for fire fighting and work in the fire department or for police work and work in the police department. A municipality would incur costs of developing and validating a revised examination.


Local Government Impact

No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
