LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 78TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

May 2, 2003

TO:
Honorable Robert Duncan, Chair, Senate Committee on Jurisprudence

FROM:
John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB2402 by Stick (Relating to the compensation of district judges in Travis County.), As Engrossed

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend Government Code, Section 32.227(a) to remove the salary cap for district judges in Travis County. The bill would also repeal Government Code, Section 32.227(c), which requires the salary of a district court judge in Travis County received from state and county sources to be at least $1,000 lower than the salary received from state and county sources by a justice of the court of appeals in the district in which Travis County is located. The bill would allow the Travis County commissioner's court to give salary increases to district judges at the county's discretion.  The bill would take effect September 1, 2003.

Local Government Impact

Because the bill would not have statewide impact on units of local government of the same type or class, no comment from this office is required by the rules of the House/Senate as to its probable fiscal implication on units of local government.
