LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 78TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

May 14, 2003

TO:
Honorable Robert Duncan, Chair, Senate Committee on Jurisprudence

FROM:
John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
HB3597 by Dawson (Relating to the abolition of the County Court at Law of Matagorda County.), As Engrossed

No fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Human Resources Code and Government Code, Chapter 25 to abolish the County Court at Law of Matagorda County.   According to the Comptroller's Office, the Matagorda County Court at Law was established in 1995 in anticipation of an increase in civil matters before the constitutional county court. The number of civil cases before the county did not increase as projected; therefore, the Matagorda County Court at Law has remained inactive since its inception.  The bill would take immediate effect if the bill receives the vote of two-thirds the members of each house.  Otherwise, the bill would take effect September 1, 2003.

Local Government Impact

Because the bill would not have statewide impact on units of local government of the same type or class, no comment from this office is required by the rules of the House/Senate as to its probable fiscal implication on units of local government.
