LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 78TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

March 18, 2003

TO:
Honorable Bill Ratliff, Chair, Senate Committee on State Affairs

FROM:
John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB482 by Madla (Relating to certain chaplains killed in the line of duty.), Committee Report 1st House, Substituted

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Government Code by adding survivors of chaplains of fire-fighting units or law enforcement agencies to the list of individuals who are eligible for death benefits.  The bill would apply to a death that occurs on or after September 1, 2003.  The Employee Retirement System of Texas estimates the approximate annual cost per public safety benefit paid is $274,000.  The fiscal impact of the bill would depend on the future number of chaplain deaths.  It is assumed that implementation of the bill would not have a significant impact on the costs of state government

Local Government Impact

No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
