LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD
Austin, Texas

FISCAL NOTE, 78TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

April 28, 2003

TO:
Honorable John Whitmire, Chair, Senate Committee on Criminal Justice

FROM:
John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB969 by Shapleigh (Relating to the punishment for the offense of assault.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The bill would amend the Penal Code by including the assault of a child as behavior punishable as a Class A misdemeanor.  It is assumed that the bill would not have a significant impact on the State.

Local Government Impact

Costs to local governments to implement the bill would vary by county depending on the number of these types of offenses that occur and judicial discretion in the imposition of jail time and fines.  No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
