Fiscal Analysis

The bill would amend the Government Code to allow the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to provide $100 per month in supplemental pay to officers who hold a degree or have obtained an equivalent number of credit hours in higher education.

Methodology

Currently, there are 1,113 Department of Public Safety officers who would qualify for supplemental pay based upon holding a degree and/or having obtained a sufficient number of credit hours equivalent to a degree. Multiplying the 1,113 officers by the $100 per month and by 12 months per year equals $1,335,600 per year.  Estimated benefits total $186,984 for total costs of $1,522,584 per year.

Local Government Impact

No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
