FISCAL NOTE, 78TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION

April 13, 2003

TO:
Honorable Florence Shapiro, Chair, Senate Committee on Education

FROM:
John Keel, Director, Legislative Budget Board

IN RE:
SB1642 by Staples (Relating to the establishment of a geriatric education and care research center at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler.), As Introduced

No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.

The University of Texas System would incur costs related to staffing and equipping the center, but these costs could be absorbed within the existing system's resources.

According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, it is estimated it would cost approximately $200,000 for the 2004-05 biennium and continuing costs of approximately $1.5 million each biennium thereafter.  The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board indicated an additional 10 full-time equivalent employees would be hired over the five-year period to staff the center.

Local Government Impact

No fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
