MINUTES SENATE COMMITTEE ON JURISPRUDENCE Wednesday, July 2, 2003 1:00 p.m. Cesar Chavez High School Auditorium, Houston, Texas ***** Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule 11.18, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Jurisprudence was held on Wednesday, July 2, 2003, in the Cesar Chavez High School Auditorium, Houston, Texas ***** MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT: Senator Robert Duncan Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. Senator Mario Gallegos, Jr. Senator Kip Averitt Senator Chris Harris Senator Todd Staples Senator Royce West ***** The chair called the meeting to order at 1:10 p.m. There being a quorum present, the following business was transacted: Senator Duncan offered welcoming comments. He introduced Araceli Sullivan, the translator for the hearing. Ms. Sullivan explained that she would be translating the meeting into English and Spanish. Senators Gallegos, Harris, West, Staples, Averitt, Whitmire, Ellis, Wentworth, Lindsay, Van de Putte, Janek and Estes offered welcoming comments. Senator Staples moved that committee limit testimony to 5 minutes. The motion passed with a record vote of 6 ayes, 0 nays, 1 absent, 0 present not voting. Witnesses testifying and registering on the bill are shown on the attached list. At 3:15 p.m. Senator Duncan moved that the Committee would stand in recess until 3:30 p.m. The chair called the meeting to order at 3:31 p.m. At 5:00 p.m. the chair moved that the Committee would stand in recess until 5:15 p.m. The chair called the meeting to order at 5:23 p.m. At 7:00 p.m. the chair announced that the Committee would stand in recess until 7:15 p.m. The chair called the meeting to order at 7:20 p.m. At 8:45 p.m. the chair announced that the Committee would stand in recess for 5 minutes. The chair called the meeting to order at 8:55 p.m. The chair moved that the public testimony be closed; without objection, it was so ordered. Senator Gallegos moved that all remaining cards of people not wishing to testify be added to the record; the motion passed with a record vote of 4 ayes, 0 nays, 3 absent, 0 present not voting. There being no further business, at 8:59 p.m. Senator Duncan moved that the Committee stand recessed subject to the call of the chair.
