H.C.R. No. 22 


HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Baylor University baseball team completed a sensational 2005 season, reaching the College World Series for the first time since 1978; and WHEREAS, The Bears punched their ticket to Omaha, Nebraska, by defeating a talented Clemson team by a score of 6-1 in Super Regional competition; seeded fourth nationally, Baylor came up short in the tournament despite overcoming a 7-0 deficit to oust top-seeded Tulane 8-7 in one of the most thrilling games in College World Series history; and WHEREAS, These dedicated student-athletes demonstrated a never-say-die attitude throughout the long and difficult season; the team finished the season with an impressive 46-24 record, including a 19-8 mark in Big 12 conference play; notably, the Bears dominated rival Texas during the regular season, sweeping four games from the Longhorns and matching the record for the most single-season wins against Texas in school history; and WHEREAS, Coach Steve Smith provided motivation and encouragement for his young players on and off the diamond, emphasizing the importance of teamwork, fundamentals, and sportsmanship, and his skillful coaching and team management helped propel the Bears to prominence among college baseball's elite teams; he was ably supported by assistant coaches Steve Johnigan, Mitch Thompson, and Chris Berry; and WHEREAS, Members of the 2005 Baylor baseball team include Wes Benefield, Drew Bias, Reid Brees, Tyler Bullock, Nick Cassavechia, Zach Dillon, Brad Ferguson, Josh Ford, Seth Fortenberry, Kerr Foster, Frank Fuda, Chase Gerdes, Michael Griffin, Cody Hall, Drew Jeffcoat, Ryan LaMotta, Randall Linebaugh, Jeff Mandel, Gabe Marchant, David Mark, Xerxes Martin, Mark McCormick, Paul Miles, Mike Pankratz, Andy Pape, Kyle Reynolds, Jake Rippee, Kevin Russo, Kevin Sevigny, Trey Taylor, Jason Thompson, Cory VanAllen, Sean Walker, Paul Witt, and Abe Woody; and WHEREAS, Athletic success at the college level requires talent, discipline, and desire, and the Baylor baseball team demonstrated these qualities and more during the 2005 season; the Bears are a source of great pride to the school's devoted fans and they are most worthy of special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas, 1st Called Session, hereby commend the Baylor Bears baseball team on an outstanding season and extend best wishes to Coach Steve Smith and his players and staff for continued success and good fortune; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
