H.C.R. No. 28
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may
temper the profound sadness the passing of Hicks Graves has brought
to all who loved this distinguished Texan; a lifelong resident of
Petty, Mr. Graves died on July 10, 2005, at the age of 92; and
WHEREAS, Born on September 12, 1912, he graduated from Paris
High School and Paris Junior College, where he won numerous medals
in track and field, and he married Mary Elba McDowell on December
15, 1935; and
WHEREAS, That same year, Mr. Graves began a career in farming
and ranching in the Petty area, and he held a great passion for the
land and his hometown throughout his life; an active member of the
Texas Short Horn Cattle Association, he was named a Conservation
Farmer of the Year and Farm Family Producer of the Year; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Graves also made many significant contributions
during his years of service as president of the West Lamar School
Board; moreover, he was a founding member of the Honey Grove Lions
Club; and
WHEREAS, The loved ones of Hicks Graves will fondly remember
him as a devoted family man and friend, and he leaves behind a
legacy to treasure for those who held him dear; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas,
1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Hicks Graves
and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his
wife of nearly 70 years, Mary Elba McDowell; to his daughter,
Margaret Ann Shelton and her husband, A. W.; to his grandchildren,
Greg Shelton and Kevin Shelton and his wife, Cathy; and to his other
relatives and friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
Hicks Graves.
