H.R. No. 34 


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, After 56 years of service to the children of Upshur County and surrounding areas, Montie Morris of Gilmer is closing the doors of her school, Morris Kindergarten, bringing to an end an exceptional tenure as an educator; and WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan's career as a teacher began after she and her husband moved to Gilmer in 1949 and she opened South's Play School in their home; by the mid-1950s, the school became South's Kindergarten, and after the death of her husband, C. V. South, and her subsequent marriage to L. J. Morris, the kindergarten was renamed Morris Kindergarten and moved to its present location in 1978; and WHEREAS, While the school has changed both names and addresses, one thing that has remained constant is the outstanding commitment Mrs. Morris demonstrates to her students; whether providing them with first-rate instruction or encouraging them to participate in community activities, including fund-raisers for worthy causes, she has made a positive difference in the lives of countless young Texans; and WHEREAS, Her contributions to her community have not been confined to the classroom; a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Mrs. Morris taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school, served on the church's administrative board, held a number of offices, and performed in the Bell Choir; moreover, she has given of her time to the VFW Auxiliary, serving as its treasurer, and the Upshur County Hospital Auxiliary, and she has shared her musical talents as a pianist with the Gilmer Convalescent Center, the Gilmer Kiwanis Club, and the Men's Asbury Sunday School Class; and WHEREAS, Those Texans who dedicate themselves to the education of children are indeed worthy of our respect and gratitude, and it is a pleasure to congratulate Montie Morris on a lifetime of educational excellence; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Montie Morris for nearly six decades of service to the youth of the Lone Star State and extend to her best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Morris as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
