R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, After 10 years of exemplary service as mayor of Athens, Jerry G. King is stepping down from his post in June of 2005; and WHEREAS, This esteemed leader attended Texas A&M University--Commerce, where he earned a bachelor's degree in economics and general business, a master's degree in business administration, and a doctoral degree in education; in addition to his duties as a public official, he serves as dean of occupational education at Trinity Valley Community College and adjunct professor of economics at Amber University; and WHEREAS, Among the many professional organizations that have benefited from Dr. King's participation are the East Texas Economic Development Board, the East Texas Tech-Prep Consortium, the East Texas Council of Government, the Texas Association of Post-Secondary Occupational Administrators, and the Texas A&M University--Commerce Alumni Board; and WHEREAS, Dr. King is also committed to numerous civic and community groups, including the Athens Leadership Institute, Keep Athens Beautiful, the Cain Center Foundation, the Kiwanis Club, the Henderson County YMCA, and the Athens Industrial Foundation; and WHEREAS, No stranger to awards during his tenure as mayor, he has received the 1997 Athens Citizen of the Year Award from the Athens Chamber of Commerce, the 1996 Appreciation Award from the NAACP, the 1998 Community Service Award from the Texas A&M University--Commerce Alumni Association, and the 1999 Distinguished Service Award from Henderson County; and WHEREAS, With the loving support of his wife, Dosha, and his son, Clint, Jerry King has helped lead Athens into a new century; his efforts to promote the well-being of area residents and his vision for a prosperous and productive future will undoubtedly continue to benefit countless East Texans for years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Mayor Jerry G. King for his contributions to the city of Athens and extend to him sincere best wishes for success in his future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. King as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
