R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The 70th birthday of an esteemed Texan is truly cause for celebration, and Sergeant Major Benito V. Guerrero, U.S. Army (Ret.), of San Antonio marked this special occasion on April 3, 2005; and WHEREAS, Born in Comal County, Sergeant Major Guerrero attended Jefferson High School, where he was active in the Junior ROTC program and subsequently joined the United States Army in 1956; he received airborne training at Fort Bragg and was assigned as a senior rifleman to Company A, 505th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division; and WHEREAS, After serving in Germany as part of the "Black Panther" battle group and attending the 7th U.S. Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy and the Federal Republic of Germany Airborne School, this noteworthy Texan was deployed to numerous locations around the world, including the Dominican Republic, the Panama Canal Zone, and Vietnam; and WHEREAS, In 1980, Sergeant Major Guerrero was assigned to serve as chief instructor at The University of Texas at Austin, and he founded the ROTC program at Southwest Texas State University; a brave and dedicated patriot, he has been justly recognized with countless honors during his 30-year military career, including the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with V Device and three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Purple Heart with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Meritorious Service Medal; and WHEREAS, Supported by his loving wife of 44 years, Ingrid, and his two sons, Benito Guerrero remains an active member of the military community of San Antonio, and has served as commander of the Alamo Silver Wings Airborne Association for the past 10 years; as president of Veterans Against Drugs and Violence since 2002, he speaks to local students about the merits of staying in school and cultivating the six character traits of patriotism, honesty, respect, loyalty, integrity, and courage; and WHEREAS, American citizens owe an immeasurable debt to military personnel like Sergeant Major Benito Guerrero, whose efforts have secured this nation's treasured liberties, and it is a privilege to honor him in his 70th year; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Sergeant Major Benito V. Guerrero, U.S. Army (Ret.), for three decades of honorable service to our country and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and fulfillment; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Sergeant Major Guerrero as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
