H.R. No. 216
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, A loving family and good friends will long cherish
their memories of Rufus Paul King of Houston, who passed away on
June 7, 2005, at the age of 66; and
WHEREAS, Born on November 16, 1938, in Abilene, Mr. King
attended Abilene High School in his youth and was a standout member
of the school's football team, which earned three consecutive state
titles and was honored as the "Team of the Century" by the Dallas
Morning News; and
WHEREAS, He was twice chosen All-District 1AAAA and All-State
for his talent on the gridiron, and after graduating in 1957, he
followed his stellar high school football career with an equally
successful collegiate one at Rice University; while attending Rice,
Mr. King was named All-Conference Guard, an Eastman Kodak
All-American, and a member of the All-Southwest Academic Team, and
he was inducted into the Rice University Athletic Hall of Fame in
1982 and honored as "All-Time All-Southwest Conference Guard" at
the end of the Southwest Conference era; and
WHEREAS, A valued member of the Houston community, Mr. King
distinguished himself through his leadership on the board of
directors of the "R" Association and on the board of deacons at
Houston's First Baptist Church, where he attended services for 48
years; and
WHEREAS, This accomplished Texan will long be remembered as a
devoted husband and family man, outstanding athlete, and treasured
friend to many; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Rufus Paul King and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
family: to his beloved wife of 42 years, Johnnie Loraine Mills
King; to his children and their spouses, Jennifer and Clifford
Stockstill, Geoffrey and Catherine King, and Jonathan and Alison
King; to his grandchildren, Caleb and Cade Stockstill, Cooper King,
and Clare King; to his mother-in-law, Frances Mills, and to his
other loved ones; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Rufus Paul
King.
