R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, After 31 years of service to the city, Carlos Cantu
is stepping down from his post as mayor of La Feria; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed leader attended Texas A&I in
Kingsville, Texas Southmost in Brownsville, and Assumption
Seminary in San Antonio, where he pursued the possibility of
entering the priesthood; after graduating from Pan American College
in 1966, he ultimately chose to dedicate his life to others as a
classroom teacher and counselor, and he worked in the La Feria
school system for 26 years; and
WHEREAS, In 1974, Mayor Cantu began his career in city
government when he was elected alderman; after many years of
dedicated service in that capacity, he was elected mayor in 1999,
and he may take special pride in his efforts to transform the
economic landscape of this South Texas town; and
WHEREAS, Among the many community development projects that
have benefited from Mayor Cantu's six years of leadership are the
Veteran's Memorial Sports Complex, the city swimming pool, A. J.
Wilson field, the Water and Wastewater Project, and the Nature
Park; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this La Feria native has been
supportive of area businesses and committed to the expansion of
city facilities and services, advancing the construction of a new
fire station and city jail, and the expansion of the city library
and city hall; and
WHEREAS, With the loving support of his wife Elizabeth and
their six children, Carlos Cantu has helped lead La Feria into a new
century; his efforts to promote the well-being of area residents
and his vision for a prosperous and productive future will continue
to benefit countless people for years to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Mayor Carlos Cantu
for his contributions to the city of La Feria and extend to him
sincere best wishes for all his future endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mayor Cantu as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
