H.R. No. 227


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Willie Forestina Hicks Cornelius of Dallas has been selected as the recipient of a 2005 Outstanding Texan Award in the area of religion by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus; and WHEREAS, The Outstanding Texan Award was created to honor individuals who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving, developing, and enriching the lives of others; and WHEREAS, Born in Uniontown, Alabama, Mrs. Cornelius attended Leland College, Dunbar Junior College in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Bishop College; her long and successful tenure as a teacher began shortly after her graduation from high school, when her parents opened a spare room in their house to a kindergarten class; her first official assignment was in Greenwood, Louisiana, where she met her future husband, the Reverend Ulysses Sidney Cornelius; and WHEREAS, This noteworthy educator has taught in Shreveport, Bonham, Marshall, Wichita Falls, and Dallas, and in 1973, she was awarded the H. Ross Perot Award for Excellence in Teaching; a woman of deep faith, she has combined her love of teaching with her spiritual beliefs to become an active voice in her church community; and WHEREAS, A dedicated servant of God, Mrs. Cornelius has earned the respect of her friends, family, and colleagues through her exceptional service to the city of Dallas, and she is truly worthy of this special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Willie Forestina Hicks Cornelius for being named the recipient of a 2005 Outstanding Texan Award by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and fulfillment; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Cornelius as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
