H.R. No. 228
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Coach Ellis Davis, Jr., and Betty Joe Davis of
Dallas have been selected as the recipients of a 2005 Outstanding
Texan Award in the area of education by the Texas Legislative Black
Caucus; and
WHEREAS, Outstanding Texans are honored for the positive
impact they have made in their communities, and this couple's
myriad contributions as educators have truly enhanced the lives of
many individuals in the Dallas area; and
WHEREAS, For three decades, Coach Davis served the Dallas
Independent School District as a physical education teacher and
coach at the elementary, middle, and high school levels; he earned
his bachelor's degree in physical education from Bishop College and
his master's degree in education from the University of North
Texas; and
WHEREAS, This noteworthy Texan spent more than 20 years as an
athletic coach at Roosevelt High School, where he earned an
outstanding 641 wins and consistently led his basketball teams to
the top 10; he is the recipient of numerous awards, including
induction into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame and the Texas
African American Coaches Association Hall of Honor; and
WHEREAS, Like her husband, Betty Joe Davis is committed to
nurturing the lives of young people, and she enjoyed a successful
tenure as a teacher with DISD; a graduate of Booker T. Washington
High School, she earned her bachelor's degree from Prairie View A&M
University and her master's degree in education from North Texas
State University; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Davis is an active member of her community and
has volunteered for a host of civic organizations, including the
American Cancer Society, the YWCA, the C. A. W. Legal Clinic, and
the African American Museum; she is a lifetime member of the
National and State Parent Teacher Associations and has received
countless honors for her service and excellence in teaching; a
woman of deep faith, she has dedicated herself to many activities at
Good Street Baptist Church, where she has volunteered for
missionary service and taught Sunday school; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Davis are devoted parents and
grandparents, and they have earned the respect and admiration of
family, friends, and colleagues through their exceptional and
inspirational service to their community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Coach Ellis Davis,
Jr., and Betty Joe Davis for being named the recipients of a 2005
Outstanding Texan Award by the Texas Legislative Black Caucus in
the area of education and extend to them sincere best wishes for
continued success and happiness; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Davis as an expression of high regard by
the Texas House of Representatives.
