R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Oralia "Lala" Espinoza Cantu has a long history of meritorious service to the Freer community, to Duval County, and to the State of Texas, and it is a pleasure to honor her at this time; and WHEREAS, A native of Duval County, Mrs. Cantu grew up in Buena Vista and attended school in San Diego; born into poverty, she struggled early in life but committed herself to providing a brighter future for her children and her community; and WHEREAS, This determined Texan has served in a host of capacities over the years, including stints on the city council, as mayor pro tem, and as president of the Freer Water District board; moreover, she played an integral role in organizing the Freer Chamber of Commerce, incorporating the City of Freer, forming the Freer school district, and bringing HALO-Flight medical transport to the area; and WHEREAS, In addition to her many notable civic endeavors, Mrs. Cantu has lent her time and talents to 4-H, the PTA, the Duval Historical Association, and Girl Scouts of America; other organizations to benefit from her sound judgment and energetic efforts include the Freer Ladies Cattleman Association, the Freer Fair Association, and the Duval Friends of the Library, which she has served as vice chair; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Cantu was elected to the Texas Silver Haired Legislature in 1999, and was later appointed to the National Silver Haired Congress in Washington, D.C.; while serving in these esteemed bodies, she has helped to promote the interests and welfare of the residents of South Texas; and WHEREAS, Her substantial contributions have earned Mrs. Cantu nomination to the 2000 Texas Women's Hall of Fame, Who's Who Among Hispanics of America, and Personalities of America; and WHEREAS, A proud mother, committed advocate, and notable community leader, Lala Cantu has worked diligently to improve the quality of life for her fellow citizens, and her tireless efforts have produced results of lasting benefit to countless Texans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Oralia "Lala" Espinoza Cantu for her dedicated service to the Freer community and to the State of Texas and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Cantu as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
