H.R. No. 334


R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The first female ever to serve as an appellate judge in the State of Texas, Judge Mary Lou Robinson of Amarillo has benefited her fellow citizens with diligence and skill for the past five decades, and it is indeed fitting to reflect on this dedicated jurist's exemplary tenure on the bench; and WHEREAS, Judge Robinson attended Amarillo College and received her undergraduate and law degrees at The University of Texas; she began her legal career in Austin in 1949 and returned the following year to Amarillo, where she continued in private practice; and WHEREAS, In 1955, she was appointed judge of the newly created Potter County Court at Law, beginning the first of many judgeships she would hold over the course of her career; and WHEREAS, Since that time, she has also served as judge of the 108th District Court of Potter County, associate justice and then chief justice of the Court of Civil Appeals for the Seventh Supreme Judicial District, and United States District Judge for the Northern District of Texas, Amarillo Division; and WHEREAS, Judge Robinson has brought to each of these positions her characteristic intelligence and integrity, and the high esteem in which she is held by her professional peers is evident from the many honors she has been accorded, including the Texas Center for Legal Ethics Sandra Day O'Connor Award for Professional Excellence, the Texas Bar Foundation Outstanding Fifty-Year Lawyer Award, and inclusion in a special commemorative edition of Texas Lawyer magazine as one of the 100 "Legal Legends" of Texas; and WHEREAS, A vital presence in the civic life of her hometown, she has given generously of her time and talent to such worthwhile institutions as Kairos House, the Rotary Club of Amarillo, the Amarillo Club of Zonta International, and Westminster Presbyterian Church; and WHEREAS, Named the 2004 Distinguished Alumna of the Year by Amarillo College, Judge Robinson is also the recipient of the 1998 Career Achievement Award from the Amarillo Women's Network and is listed in Who's Who in America; and WHEREAS, Those Texans who dedicate themselves to the challenges of public service are truly deserving of our deepest gratitude and admiration, and Mary Lou Robinson's remarkable tenure as a jurist has set a high standard of excellence to which all may aspire; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Judge Mary Lou Robinson for her 50 years of outstanding public service and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Judge Robinson as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
