R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Plum Street United Methodist Church in Abilene is celebrating a momentous milestone with the observance of its centennial on October 30, 2005; and WHEREAS, The congregation was organized as St. Paul Methodist Church by a small, devoted group of Christians, including A. B. Johnson, Abe Anderson, Larkin Smith, Rosie Crawford, and Ivy Brooks, under the guidance of the Reverend R. B. Isom; in time, this historic church was renamed Plum Street United Methodist; and WHEREAS, Though parishioners met initially in a private home, they soon bought a lot at 541 Plum Street from the Texas and Pacific Railway and erected a sanctuary; later, in the mid-20th century, church members constructed a new building at Sixth Street and Plum; and WHEREAS, Blessed with the leadership of many fine individuals throughout its history, Plum Street UMC is shepherded today by the Reverend Iziar Lankford, a valued teacher, counselor, and stalwart friend; and WHEREAS, Since its founding, Plum Street UMC has served as a haven of hope and support for many members of the Abilene community, and it is a distinct pleasure to honor this steadfast community of faith; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate the pastor and congregation of Plum Street United Methodist Church on its centennial and extend to them warmest wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Plum Street United Methodist Church as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
