R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, George Thomas Conly, a widely respected Midland oil
man and distinguished civic leader, is marking his 80th birthday on
July 23, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Born in San Diego, California, in 1925, Mr. Conly
grew up primarily in Aspermont before moving to Midland in 1939; he
graduated from Midland High School in 1942 and served in the U.S.
Navy from 1943 to 1946; a radioman first class, he saw duty in the
South Pacific on board the USS Sabine and USS Fillmore; and
WHEREAS, After returning to civilian life, Mr. Conly earned a
business degree in accounting from Southern Methodist University in
1949 and in 1950 joined Hendrick, Newkirk and Whitley Accounting
Firm in Midland; two years later he formed a partnership with Daniel
Griffith and in 1954 established a CPA partnership with M. A.
Murphree; in 1960 Mr. Conly cofounded the Conly, Peters and Green
Accounting Firm, which shortly thereafter became Conly, Peters, and
Smith; and
WHEREAS, George Conly entered the oil business in 1972, when
he became president of Coquina Oil Company; he joined Bill Barnes in
launching Laguna Petroleum Corporation in 1977 and soon became the
sole owner; in 2002, he sold Laguna Petroleum to OXY and formed Uno
Mas Oil Company, which he continues to operate; and
WHEREAS, In addition to serving on the board of directors of
Offshore Logistics in the 1970s, Mr. Conly has served on various
committees of the Texas Society of CPAs and is a charter member of
the Permian Basin Chapter of CPAs; and
WHEREAS, Held in high regard for his seasoned judgment and
able leadership, he has also served as a member of the City of
Midland Planning and Zoning Commission, as a member of the board of
governors for High Sky Children's Ranch, and as president and
director of the YMCA; and
WHEREAS, A valued congregant of First Presbyterian Church,
Mr. Conly is also a charter member and treasurer of The Racquet
Club; in his leisure time, he has pursued such wide-ranging
avocations as flying, water skiing, snow skiing, and deep-sea
fishing, as well as tennis, golf, and volleyball; and
WHEREAS, George Conly married Betty Thornton in 1947 and the
couple became the proud parents of two daughters, Debbie Conly Kemp
and Andye Conly; today their family also embraces two cherished
grandsons, Conly Gevecker and Cole Bryan; and
WHEREAS, A devoted family man and esteemed member of both the
accounting and petroleum industries, Mr. Conly has long exemplified
the constructive civic engagement that builds strong, vibrant, and
caring communities, and it is indeed a pleasure to join in honoring
him as he celebrates this momentous personal milestone; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby warmly congratulate George
Thomas Conly on the joyous occasion of his 80th birthday and extend
to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Conly as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
