R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Members of the Mays family are gathering for a
reunion in Robstown and Corpus Christi on August 5-7, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Celebrating 93 years of history in Robstown and the
surrounding area, Mays family members take great pride in their
forebears, Riley and Ella Mays, who, in 1912, became the first
African American family to settle in the town; the couple founded
and organized Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in 1918 and later
used the church building to establish the community's first African
American public school, which was named for Phillis Wheatley; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, the contributions made by the men
and women of the Mays family, which has included many educators,
have been interwoven in the compelling story of Texas, and the 2005
reunion provides a welcome opportunity for participants to pay
homage to their ancestors and celebrate their shared heritage; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 2005 Mays
family reunion and extend to all those attending this event sincere
best wishes for a memorable and meaningful gathering; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Mays family as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
