R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Children are the Lone Star State's most precious resource, and those dedicated professionals who seek to nurture and educate tomorrow's leaders indeed merit our admiration and gratitude; and WHEREAS, Janet McAfee Scott is one such individual, and her commitment to excellence in education is evidenced by her outstanding teaching career that has spanned more than a quarter-century; and WHEREAS, After 15 years of exemplary service at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in the Dallas Independent School District, Ms. Scott is stepping down from her position as a teacher and math team coach, and this occasion presents a fitting opportunity to reflect on her myriad achievements in her field; and WHEREAS, Ms. Scott began working for Franklin Middle School in 1990, and has taught pre-advanced placement mathematics, geometry, algebra, and advanced math topics; in her role as math team coach, she has consistently led her students to success in the district's Mathematics Olympiad and state competitions; and WHEREAS, Born in Terrell to Louise and Bill McAfee, this noteworthy Texan earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education from The University of Texas at Austin and her teaching certificate and master's degree in mathematics from Texas Woman's University; and WHEREAS, In addition to her duties at Franklin Middle School, Ms. Scott has taught pre-advanced placement mathematics, geometry, and algebra at Hillcrest High School, where she has also served as a math team coach; and WHEREAS, Ms. Scott is a respected member of various professional organizations, including the Mathematics Association of America and the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association, for which she has served as middle school director and coordinator of its annual contest; she is also the founder of the William C. McAfee Mathematics Excellence Foundation at Texas A&M University-Commerce and a summer math camp for girls at Southern Methodist University; and WHEREAS, No stranger to honors, Ms. Scott has received numerous accolades, including the Edyth May Sliffe Award for distinguished teaching in junior high school mathematics, the Honorary Life Membership Award from the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers, and inclusion in Who's Who Among America's Teachers; the first teacher invited to serve on the State MathCounts committee, she is also the recipient of an innovative teaching grant from Stanford University; and WHEREAS, On her departure from Franklin Middle School, Ms. Scott begins a new chapter in her career as a teacher, and with the support of her loving son, Greg, and her grandchild, River, she will undoubtedly bring her characteristic energy and enthusiasm to her new position as a mathematics instructor at Parish Episcopal School; and WHEREAS, Janet Scott's impressive skill as an educator and her passionate commitment to the needs of her students are truly outstanding, and her dedication, creativity, and encouragement will long continue to inspire all who know her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Janet McAfee Scott for her exceptional tenure at Benjamin Franklin Middle School and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Scott as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
