R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, With the passing of Manuel O. Narvaez on May 28,
2005, at the age of 76, the citizens of Corpus Christi have lost an
eloquent advocate for working people, an outspoken opponent of
injustice, and a loyal friend; and
WHEREAS, Born in Falfurrias, Mr. Narvaez attended the
University of Houston before embarking on his life's work as a labor
leader and civil rights activist; and
WHEREAS, An employee of the Reynolds Metal Company for three
decades, Mr. Narvaez was also the employee and civil rights
coordinator for District 37 of the United Steelworkers of America,
overseeing the union's efforts in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas;
and
WHEREAS, He played an instrumental role in the federal
lawsuit of Cisneros et al. v. Corpus Christi Independent School
District, a watershed decision that hastened court-ordered
integration and marked a significant step forward in securing the
civil rights of Mexican Americans; and
WHEREAS, His dedicated efforts in behalf of his fellowman
were an apt expression of the ideals of justice and fair play on
which our nation was founded, and he leaves behind an inspiring
legacy of achievement that will continue to benefit generations of
Texans to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
Manuel O. Narvaez and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
family: to his wife, Mary; to his son, Manuel Narvaez, Jr.; to his
daughters, Olga Varela, Mary Jane Saldivar, Diana Gonzalez, and
Elizabeth Lerma; to his 12 grandchildren and 19
great-grandchildren; and to his other family members and many
friends and admirers; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House
of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Manuel
O. Narvaez.
