No. 439R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The inaugural African American Economic Roundtable is being held in San Antonio at Our Lady of Charity Convent on July 29, 2005; and WHEREAS, Organized by the Jefferson Heights Association and the Community Economic Revitalization Agency (CERA), with support from the City of San Antonio, the conference is designed to assess the opportunities and challenges facing African American residents--some 80,000 strong--in the Alamo City; and WHEREAS, Goals for the roundtable include defining a quality of life that will sustain San Antonio's African American citizens, promoting economic empowerment through the dissemination of information, strengthening collaborative community relationships, and creating lasting public-private partnerships; in addition, it is expected that the roundtable will serve as a platform from which future discussion can stem; and WHEREAS, Panelists for this notable event come from both the public and private sectors and bring to the forum a broad range of expertise, knowledge that will be crucial as the work of community and economic development moves forward; and WHEREAS, The Jefferson Heights Association, a dynamic organization founded in 2002 to address social, economic, and environmental concerns in one of the city's most historic districts, and CERA, a widely respected nonprofit that promotes economic revitalization on the city's Eastside, are to be warmly commended on their hosting of this important exchange; by launching a serious, comprehensive conversation about the condition of the black community and about strategies for meeting its needs, these groups are making a significant contribution both to the well-being of San Antonio's African American residents and to the strength and vitality of the city itself; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the inaugural African American Economic Roundtable in San Antonio and extend sincere best wishes to all those associated with this gathering for a most productive and informative event.
