R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The "Players' Salute to Coach Barry Switzer" gala weekend in Houston being held from August 12 to 13, 2005, pays tribute to one of the premier football coaches of the modern era; and WHEREAS, An Arkansas native, Coach Switzer graduated from Crossett High School with honors and went on to play center and linebacker for the University of Arkansas; hired by Oklahoma University as an offensive line coach in 1966, he was named offensive coordinator the following year and is credited with introducing the wishbone offense to the Sooner team, paving the way for the university's remarkable football dynasty; and WHEREAS, During his 16-year tenure at Oklahoma University, Coach Switzer accumulated a 157-29-4 record, making him the winningest active coach in the country; tallying a 28-game winning streak in his first three seasons as head coach, Coach Switzer led the Sooner team to three national championships, 12 Big Eight Conference championships, and eight bowl wins, before retiring from OU in June 1989; and WHEREAS, Coach Switzer began his storied tenure with the Dallas Cowboys in April 1994, when he was named the team's head coach; in his first year coaching in the National Football League, Coach Switzer led his Cowboys team through a 13-5 season and to the National Football Conference championship game; the following season he brought Dallas all the way to Super Bowl XXX, where they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers to claim the coveted Super Bowl ring, making Coach Switzer only the second member of his profession to coach his teams to a National Collegiate Athletics Association football championship and a Super Bowl victory; and WHEREAS, This legendary coach is held in the highest regard by his former players and his countless fans, and his lifetime achievements on the gridiron indeed merit special recognition; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Barry Switzer on his remarkable coaching career and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Coach Switzer as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
