CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Among the businesses that have most shaped the character and destiny of Texas are its newspapers; newspapers have touched the lives of citizens of this great state since its earliest days, and their role in documenting the struggles and successes that Texans have experienced has helped shape the future as well as preserve the past; the bond between a citizen and his local newspaper is one that lasts a lifetime; and WHEREAS, The Capitol grounds contain many statues, monuments and exhibits that pay tribute to the people, events and ideals that Texans hold dear, and these displays are stirring reminders of the rich and colorful history of the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, It is right and fitting that we recognize Texas newspapers and their many positive contributions to the state, and a statue honoring newspapers would be an appropriate and lasting acknowledgement of the efforts of this valuable industry; and WHEREAS, In recognition of its 125th anniversary, the Board of Directors of the Texas Press Association in June, 2004, unanimously approved a motion authorizing the necessary funds required to erect a life-size bronze statue of an early 20th century newsboy on the Capitol grounds as a symbol of the vital role played by newspapers in the development of Texas; and WHEREAS, Chapter 443, Government Code, authorizes the State Preservation Board to preserve, maintain and restore the Capitol, the General Land Office Building, their contents, their grounds and the monuments and exhibits on the grounds; the erection on the Capitol grounds of a monument honoring the newspaper industry of Texas falls within the board's purview; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas, 1st Called Session, hereby direct the State Preservation Board to accept the donation of a bronze newsboy statue from the Texas Press Association and to provide for the permanent placement of such statue on the Capitol grounds as a tribute to Texas newspapers; and, be it further RESOLVED, That the State Preservation Board have responsibility to approve the location of the monument and to oversee its installation; and, be it further RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward an official copy of this resolution to the executive director of the State Preservation Board. Directing the State Preservation Board to accept a donated statute honoring Texas newspapers and to erect the statute on the Capitol grounds.
