SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 24
In Memory
of
Eli James Garza
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Eli James Garza, who died June 7, 2005, at the age of 79; and WHEREAS, Eli James Garza was born in Austin on March 23, 1926, to Ben Garza, Sr., and Rosa Garza; he attended Saint Edward's Academy and studied architecture at The University of Texas; and WHEREAS, Eli worked alongside his father at Ben Garza's meat markets while he was growing up; an entrepreneur, he embarked on his first business venture with the opening of Eli's Lounge on 5th Street; he operated the lounge from 1954 to 1964 and then managed the Alamo Lounge; and WHEREAS, In the late 1960s, he served as a building inspector with the Veteran's Administration; in 1971, he launched his own company, Building Compliance Inspectors, a successful inspection company that served many home builders throughout the greater Austin area; and WHEREAS, For the last 15 years of his life, Eli lived on the ranch in southwest Austin that his parents had bought in 1928; he was an avid gardener and was dedicated to the care and preservation of the land; he was a devotee of architecture, construction, and design, and he enjoyed collecting antiques; he was a lifetime member of the Elks; and WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, Eli Garza gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew him; and WHEREAS, Eli was a devoted brother and uncle, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Eli James Garza: his sister, Geraldine Fleming, and his many nieces and nephews; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Eli Garza.
