SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 90
In Memory
of
John Freeman Hightower
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Plano in mourning the loss of John Freeman Hightower, who died
June 1, 2005, at the age of 91; and
WHEREAS, John was born August 1, 1913, in Vian, Oklahoma;
he graduated cum laude from Huston-Tillotson College with degrees
in biology and mathematics, and he later earned a master's degree
in administration at Texas Southern University; and
WHEREAS, He taught in Anton and moved to Plano in 1956,
where he taught science and coached at Douglass High School; he
became principal there after completing his master's degree; and
WHEREAS, The first African American in Plano to be named
Outstanding Citizen of the Year, Mr. Hightower donated his time
and talents to many worthy causes, including the Rotary Club, the
Plano African American Museum, and the Plano Community Forum; and
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, he was a member of Hill Chapel
Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, where he served on the
Steward Board, the Trustee Board, and the Lay Council; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Hightower leaves behind memories that will be
treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the family of John Freeman Hightower: his wife,
Dr. Myrtle Nash Hightower; his daughter, Johnnie Hightower Burns;
his stepsons, Buford and Victor Jones; his sisters, Geneva Poole
and Bulah Logan; and his two granddaughters and two
great-grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of John Freeman Hightower.
