SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 105
In Memory
of
Richard Louis Goodman
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Richard Louis Goodman, who died May 28, 2005, at the age of 55; and WHEREAS, Known for his big heart, quick wit, and passion for the underdog, Richard Goodman served as a bridge between the old and the new as Austin began the transition from tranquil college town to the booming high-tech metropolis it has become; he left a mark that is still being felt today, as the issues he championed continue to shape the life of Austin into the 21st century; and WHEREAS, Born June 8, 1949, in Laredo, Richard had a passion and a gift for communication; this quality, combined with his beautiful, resonant voice, led him to a career in broadcasting; he moved to Austin in 1969 and worked for KTBC AM/FM/TV; he later served as news director for KVUE-TV; and WHEREAS, Richard's charisma and ability to connect with people were noticed by Democratic Party activists in Austin who saw in him a bright political future; he was elected to the Austin City Council in 1977, where he served until 1983; a poll taken during that time named him the most popular member of the council; and WHEREAS, Richard was at the forefront of the early environmental movement in Austin, and he acted as a liaison between developers and environmentalists; fair housing, equal rights, and downtown revitalization were among the other causes championed by Richard during his tenure on the council; and WHEREAS, A staunch supporter of The University of Texas women's athletics, Richard fought hard to increase funding for the Women's Athletic Department; in the time since his council tenure, the Lady Longhorns have won 27 national championships; and WHEREAS, Noted for his compassion, warmth, and sense of humor, Richard Goodman gave generously of himself to others and to his community, and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Richard Louis Goodman: his daughter, Lisa Goodman; and his son, John Bradford Goodman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Richard Goodman.
