SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 110
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, which is
hosting its 99th Anniversary General Convention on August 4 of
this year; and
WHEREAS, The first intercollegiate Greek-letter
fraternity established for African-Americans, Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Incorporated, was founded at Cornell University in
1906 to serve as a study and support group for minority students
who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially; and
WHEREAS, Fraternity chapters were soon established at
other colleges and universities, many of them historically black
institutions, advancing the organization's principles of
scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of
humanity; and
WHEREAS, This prestigious organization counts among its
members and alumni some of the most respected and eloquent voices
for the advancement of civil rights; and
WHEREAS, With a theme of "The Gateway to 100," the 99th
Anniversary General Convention takes place in Houston, and
attendees will celebrate the vision and leadership the
fraternity has provided to communities across our nation and its
philanthropic endeavors on behalf of disadvantaged people around
the world; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Alpha Phi
Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, for 99 years of exceptional
service; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the fraternity as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
