SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 111
In Memory
of
Melvin Donald Smith
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Cleburne in mourning the loss of Melvin Donald Smith, who died
July 8, 2005, at the age of 78; and
WHEREAS, Don was born August 22, 1926, to Perry Smith and
Fanny Herblein Smith in Elbert, Texas; after serving in the
Army Air Corps in World War II, he attended Weatherford Junior
College and Texas Wesleyan College, where he earned a bachelor's
degree in science; he received a master's degree in education
from Texas Christian University; and
WHEREAS, An energetic advocate of education, Don Smith
began his teaching and coaching career in Granbury in 1950 and
rose to the position of high school principal; and
WHEREAS, He continued his career in Jacksboro, serving
first as a principal and then as a superintendent for the district;
he became superintendent of Cleburne Independent School District
in 1971, where he served until his retirement in 1986; and
WHEREAS, A respected civic leader, Don contributed his
time and energy to his community; he served as president and
director of the Jacksboro Lions Club and the Jacksboro and
Cleburne chambers of commerce, and he was named Outstanding
Citizen of Cleburne in 1985; and
WHEREAS, His faith was evidenced in his daily life; he was
an elder of the Christian Church, and he served as a charter
member and president of the Tuesday Forum and as Lay Advisory
Committee Chairman of Southwestern Adventist University; and
WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, Don
was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; he leaves behind
memories that will be treasured forever by his family and many
friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Melvin Donald Smith: his
wife of 23 years, Wanda; his sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and
Jeanne Smith, Craig and Nancy Smith, and Max and Tammy Nimmo; his
daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Richard Schechter; his sisters,
Velma Rea Pounds and Jewel Heard; and his grandchildren and
great-grandchildren; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
so in memory of Melvin Donald Smith.
