SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 114
WHEREAS, September 4, 2005, will indeed be a special day
for William Bernard Duke of Nacogdoches, for on that date he will
commemorate his 90th birthday; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1915 in Chireno, Mr. Duke graduated from
Chireno High School before completing his higher education at
Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College and Sam Houston State
Teachers College; and
WHEREAS, This patriotic Texan enlisted in the United States
Army in 1941, and he was part of the D-Day invasion that took the
Normandy shore in 1944; he also saw service in Germany, Holland,
and the United Kingdom before returning home to Texas in 1945 and
settling in Nacogdoches; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Duke married Ruby Sizemore on August 31, 1947,
embarking on a union that would continue to grow in mutual affection,
admiration, and respect with each passing year; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated public servant throughout his career,
Mr. Duke distinguished himself in the employ of the United States
Department of Agriculture, working for the Forest Service from
1945 until his retirement in 1972; he remains an active member of
his community today and attends the First Baptist Church, where
he serves the congregation as a deacon; and
WHEREAS, With nearly nine decades of wonderful memories
and a close-knit circle of family and friends, Bill Duke truly
has reason to celebrate; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate
William Bernard Duke on his upcoming 90th birthday and extend
to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it
further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
prepared for Mr. Duke as an expression of high regard from the
Texas Senate.
