SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 120
WHEREAS, Vikki J. Martin has made important contributions
as a community advocate in the City of Dallas, and her extraordinary
work as executive director of the Ferguson Road Initiative has
produced results of lasting benefit to area Texans; and
WHEREAS, A professional artist and educator at the
Episcopal School of Dallas, Ms. Martin earned her bachelor's
degree in painting from the University of Tulsa and her master's
degree in drawing from The University of Texas at Austin; she is
also a graduate of the Interaction Institute for Social Change
in Dallas; and
WHEREAS, This noteworthy Texan has worked tirelessly
to launch grassroots campaigns for community development,
mobilization, and consensus building; an effective civic leader
and activist, she helped to start the Claremont Addition
Neighborhood Association/Crime Watch 1177, which eventually
became the Ferguson Road Initiative, a nonprofit organization
dedicated to the improvement of the lower Ferguson Road community;
and
WHEREAS, Under her leadership, the Ferguson Road Initiative
is promoting and protecting the interests of 13 neighborhood
associations and 20,000 residents, businesses, churches, and
schools; moreover, the organization has secured a "Weed and Seed"
grant from the United States Department of Justice, which has
aided an antiviolence and anticrime strategy in the area; and
WHEREAS, The strength of our cities depends on the
dedication of individuals like Vikki Martin, who has volunteered
her time and talents to help restore and revitalize the Ferguson
Road community, and it is a privilege to recognize her many
accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Vikki J. Martin
for her exceptional contributions to the City of Dallas and
extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success and
achievement; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
prepared for Ms. Martin as an expression of high regard from the
Texas Senate.
