SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 136
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Sherryl Ann Hanks Muller, chief of staff to Senator Frank Madla, for her 25 years of outstanding service with the legislature; and WHEREAS, After returning to Texas from living in New Orleans, Sherry Muller joined the staff of Senator Frank Madla on August 1, 1980; it is said that during her job interview with him, she asked him point-blank if he was a crook; after all, she had been in Louisiana where politicians were known to be crooked; Frank thought she was going to bribe him to be on his staff!; little did he know then how ethical she was, or that she would become such an outstanding employee that he would later have to stave off those who would be looking to hire her away from his office; and WHEREAS, Sherry quickly rose in the ranks to become Frank's right and left hand, as well as his trusted confidante; Sherry is dedicated and fiercely loyal to Frank, and she is the one person the staff goes to with their problems; she is articulate, intelligent, funny, and sensitive; she is quick to laugh and see the humor in a situation, and she has great people skills; and WHEREAS, Over the years, Sherry has spent many long and sleepless nights working on legislation that was important to Frank and to the people of Texas; she has dedicated herself to perfection in her work; she has been instrumental in passing many pieces of important legislation, including therapeutic optometry (a stunning defeat to the Texas Medical Association) and the all-time favorite--direct shipping of wine; Sherry has probably written more laws than most lawyers and could easily pass the bar should she put her mind to it; and WHEREAS, When it comes to anything computer-generated, Sherry can do it; over the years, she has worked on more computers than most of us have ever seen and often has worked on two or three at a time; she has been known to crash the whole state system and possibly set off rockets; when PacMan first came out, she spent many quarters and many hours playing the game; she loves a good challenge; and WHEREAS, While Sherry is often not on time to work, she is always the last to stop working; it is not unusual to get e-mails from her that were sent out at 2 or 3 a.m.; she is famous for her staff memos, which are always sent with high importance and which prompt a circulation of e-mails between staff members wondering who messed up; she has helped to develop various systems used by the Texas Senate; if you attend any senate orientation, you will hear someone say "Sherry in Senator Madla's office has the e-mail system down to a fine art!"; and WHEREAS, Sherry has given up a lot in her life to work for Senator Madla; she would move to Austin to work during legislative sessions and drive home every weekend to be with her daughter, Shaine; many miles were put on her car; Sherry and her mother, "Mombo" to all of us, share a home in San Antonio, and it was with the help of Mombo that Sherry was able to work in Austin; throughout her career, Sherry has also had the love and support of her friend Rick Reynolds, who has helped her through the ups and downs--and believe it or not, a few exist--of life with the Texas Legislature; and WHEREAS, Sherry has a tendency for getting on her soapbox regarding some perceived injustice, and in most cases, she is right about it; mention a subject, and she is off and running on a 15-minute dissertation (maybe longer) analyzing all angles of the topic; suffice to say, she does love to talk!; it should also be said that Sherry is not what is known as a neatness freak--put more directly, have you seen her desk lately?; and WHEREAS, In spite of her shortcomings, it must be stated in full truth--Sherry is an indispensable member of Senator Madla's staff and is beloved by her colleagues and all who work with her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 79th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Sherry Muller on her exceptional leadership and invaluable contributions to the Office of Senator Madla and the Texas Legislature; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of highest esteem from the Texas Senate.
