SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 139
In Memory
of
Rafael A. Carrillo, Jr.
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of United States Army
Specialist Rafael A. "TJ" Carrillo, Jr., who died June 28, 2005,
at the age 21, while serving his country during Operation Iraqi
Freedom; and
WHEREAS, The spirit and courage of a young man who had
found his direction in life showed itself in the way he lived that
life, in the way he brought humor and joy to the people around
him, and in the way he served his country as an American hero; and
WHEREAS, TJ was a graduate of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch High
School; upon joining the army, he was assigned to the 1st
Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division,
Fort Stewart, Georgia; this courageous young soldier was serving
his second tour of duty in Iraq with the Desert Rogues; he was
killed when his vehicle was hit by mortar fire in Baghdad; and
WHEREAS, TJ earned his Combat Infantryman's Badge at the
age of 19 and was with the first division to arrive in Baghdad in
the early days of the war in Iraq; he was posthumously awarded the
Bronze Star and the Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have young
men and women whose love for their country inspires them to take
up military service; their patriotism serves as an inspiration to
all, and their sacrifice is never to be forgotten; and
WHEREAS, TJ Carrillo was beloved by his fellow soldiers and
was a devoted son, brother, and grandson, and he leaves behind
memories that will be cherished forever by his family and many
friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
79th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere
condolences to the bereaved family of Rafael A. "TJ" Carrillo,
Jr.: his mother and stepfather, Amy and Jess Tippie; his father,
Tony Carrillo; his sister, Julia Carrillo; his stepbrother,
Brice Tippie; his grandparents, James and Gail White; and his
great-grandmother, Edna Chisum; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
day, it do so in memory of TJ Carrillo.
