CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times, loving moments, and meaningful accomplishments may comfort the family and friends of the Honorable Ernesto Sotelo Gallego of Alpine, who passed away on July 22, 2005, at the age of 84; and WHEREAS, Born in Rowena on October 12, 1920, Mr. Gallego joined the U.S. Army Air Corps, fought in Europe during World War II, and retired after 21 years of service; after leaving the military, he worked for United Airlines and was a member of the American GI Forum; a strong advocate for veterans, he also worked with the Vietnam Veterans of America; and WHEREAS, When Mr. Gallego returned to Alpine, he took an active role in public service; he was elected to the Brewster County Commissioners Court and the Alpine City Council and became the first Hispanic mayor of Alpine; and WHEREAS, This distinguished Texan devoted much of his life to serving his country and his community, and the legacy of good works that he leaves behind will continue to have a positive influence in the lives of others for many years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Ernesto Sotelo Gallego and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Delia; to his brother, Johnny Gallego; to his sister, Elodia Fierro; to his children, Nancy Gallego, Barbara Medina, Gary Gallego, Helen Schneider, Gloria Gallego, and Roy Gallego; to his stepchildren, Liz Pineda, Nadine Mata, Johnny Pineda, and Margo Pineda; to his 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren; and to his many other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of Ernesto Sotelo Gallego.
