H.C.R. No. 16
HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Eleven-year-old Dereck Hatley of Sulphur Springs is
a courageous young man who rescued his four-year-old friend,
Anthony Daley, from a vicious dog attack on July 16, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Dereck and Anthony had been playing with a friendly
dog when a stray pit bull came upon them; when Anthony began to run,
the pit bull pulled the young boy to the ground and began biting
him; and
WHEREAS, Putting himself directly in harm's way, Dereck ran
to the aid of his friend and kicked the dog until it released
Anthony; quickly grabbing his friend, he ran to safety, carrying
the boy while the two were still being pursued by the attacking dog;
and
WHEREAS, Through his actions, Dereck Hatley enabled his
friend to escape this harrowing incident without life-threatening
or permanent injuries, and the brave and swift response of this
remarkable young man has earned him the admiration and appreciation
of a grateful community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the 79th Legislature of the State of Texas,
2nd Called Session, hereby honor Dereck Hatley for his exceptional
act of heroism and commend him for the maturity and composure he
demonstrated in an emergency situation; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Hatley as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives and Senate.
