H.R. No. 19 





R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The wedding anniversary of two individuals who have shared 50 fulfilling years of marriage is truly a memorable occasion worthy of special recognition, and on September 11, 2005, Jack Phillips Smith and the former Sharon Jean Leisch of Dallas are commemorating this significant event in their lives; and WHEREAS, The couple grew up only a few miles from each other in Danville, Illinois, but didn't meet until both attended a 1954 Danville High School basketball game while Mr. Smith was on leave from his assignment in Germany as a member of the United States Army; after a brief courtship and the arrival of an engagement ring sent through the mail, the bride-to-be prepared for an overseas wedding; fortune was on their side, however, for the prospective groom was able to return to the states, and they were married in a ceremony held at First Presbyterian Church in their hometown; and WHEREAS, During their first decade of marriage, the Smiths lived in various Midwestern and East Coast cities; by 1965, when they moved to Dallas and Mr. Smith went to work with Texas Instruments, they had started their family and were the parents of two young daughters; and WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Smith focused much of their attention and energy on their growing family, cheerfully supporting their children's involvement in a multitude of activities; in addition, the family spent time together participating in church activities, swimming in their backyard pool, and traveling cross-country in their station wagon; and WHEREAS, Today, Jack and Sharon Smith take great pride in their four children and their spouses, Laurel Verheul and her husband, Maarten, Julia Monroe and her husband, John, Dinah Welsh and her husband, Rod, and Stuart Smith and his wife, Debra, as well as their seven grandchildren, Hunter Kees Verheul, Lacey Jean Verheul, Hayden Phillips Smith, Micah Davenport Smith, Siena Grace Welsh, Caroline Lynn Monroe, and Clark Noah Monroe; and WHEREAS, The Smiths' lively household has always included a varied assortment of pets, among them cats, goldfish, and, especially, many treasured dachshunds; the four-legged objects of Mr. and Mrs. Smith's affections are currently their dog, Stotts, and their five "granddogs"; and WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Smith have both long been active in Highland Park Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Smith formerly served as a deacon and now serves as a reserve deacon; in their leisure time, the pair have embarked on trips to destinations as diverse as London, Paris, Madrid, Mexico, and Alaska; and WHEREAS, For half a century, this devoted couple have shared the trials and triumphs of marriage and parenthood, and it is a distinct pleasure to join in recognizing them for the happy and rewarding life they have built together; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Jack and Sharon Smith on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
