H.R. No. 21 





R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Harris Methodist H.E.B. Hospital in Bedford is donating automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to all Northeast Tarrant County high schools and to Tarrant County College Northeast; and WHEREAS, When an individual suffers cardiac arrest, early defibrillation can be a lifesaver; AEDs are specially designed to allow people with no medical training to deliver a shock to reset the heart rhythm; because of their effectiveness and ease of use, the devices have been installed in a number of offices and public places; and WHEREAS, In the United States, cardiovascular disease is the third leading cause of death among children under the age of 15, resulting in approximately 7,000 childhood fatalities each year; students are especially at risk during the summer months, when football practice begins; and WHEREAS, Valued at some $50,000 altogether, the 19 AEDs distributed by Harris Methodist H.E.B. Hospital are compatible with equipment used by local EMS services and hospital emergency rooms; in addition to the defibrillators, the hospital is providing each school with AED/CPR certification training for five people and quarterly online refresher training; and WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature has considered several bills relating to AEDs, but cost concerns have prevented the bills' passage, and Harris Methodist H.E.B. Hospital is to be commended for addressing the need identified by those measures in the absence of a state mandate; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby honor Harris Methodist H.E.B. Hospital for donating automated external defibrillators to all the high schools in Northeast Tarrant County and to Tarrant County College Northeast and extend to the hospital deepest appreciation for its continuing, committed philanthropy in behalf of the community it serves; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Harris Methodist H.E.B.
