R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Texas A&M University is committed to increasing diversity among its students, staff, and faculty; and WHEREAS, Texas A&M University has worked to fulfill this commitment through enhanced recruitment, retention, and enrollment strategies; and WHEREAS, Hispanics are the youngest and fastest growing ethnic community in the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, Texas A&M University and the National Hispanic Institute--a widely respected, Texas-based organization--have partnered to provide outreach to Hispanic students by hosting the Young Leaders Conference--Great Debate on July 21-24, 2005; and WHEREAS, The mission of the National Hispanic Institute is to provide high-achieving Hispanic high school and college students with key learning experiences that help to prepare them for leadership roles in Latino communities throughout the country; and WHEREAS, The National Hispanic Institute, serving as a voice for the Hispanic community, has successfully encouraged a significant number of young students to pursue and complete undergraduate and graduate degrees; and WHEREAS, Texas A&M University is joining with the National Hispanic Institute to provide the Hispanic community with access to educational opportunities and leadership development and to better acquaint young people and their families with higher education; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby recognize the importance of the Hispanic population to the future of the State of Texas and commend Texas A&M University and the National Hispanic Institute on their hosting of the Young Leaders Conference--Great Debate.
