H.R. No. 83 





R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The city of Winnsboro, which commemorated its sesquicentennial in 2004, has been designated a Preserve America Community; and WHEREAS, Led by First Lady Laura Bush, the Preserve America initiative recognizes cities that protect and celebrate their heritage, use their historic assets for economic development and community revitalization, and encourage people to experience and appreciate local historic resources through educational programs and heritage tourism; and WHEREAS, The celebration of Winnsboro's 150th anniversary gave rise to myriad public-private partnerships and numerous instances of community-wide involvement in protecting and promoting the city's heritage, all of which weighed heavily in the decision to confer Preserve America status on this outstanding East Texas community; and WHEREAS, With this new honor, Winnsboro becomes eligible to apply for proposed matching federal grants of $10,000 to $100,000, which would assist in preserving local heritage in self-sustaining ways; and WHEREAS, The Preserve America initiative is a joint project of the White House, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Agriculture, Housing and Urban Development, and the Interior; Texas ranks second among all the states in the number of cities receiving Preserve America recognition; and WHEREAS, Selected in 2003 for participation in the Main Street program of the Texas Historical Commission, Winnsboro has demonstrated a broad-based commitment to preserving its heritage for the enrichment of present and future generations, and its citizens are to be commended for their forward-looking stewardship of an irreplaceable legacy; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Winnsboro on that city's designation as a Preserve America Community and extend to Mayor Carolyn Jones and to all the residents of that fine city sincere best wishes for continued success with their worthy endeavors.
