R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Tony Garza of Falfurrias was inducted into the National Hispanic Sports Hall of Fame in San Antonio on June 2, 2005, in recognition of his achievements as an athlete and coach; and WHEREAS, Mr. Garza graduated from Cotulla High School in 1956 and became a record-setting sprinter at Texas A&I University in Kingsville from 1958 to 1961; he won the Lone Star Conference (LSC) 100-yard dash in 1961 with a record time of 9.4 seconds, a mark that still stands as a conference best; Mr. Garza also held the LSC 220-yard dash and 100-meter dash records for a number of years, and he was a member of the 1960 Javelinas mile relay team, which won the LSC gold medal; and WHEREAS, After graduating from Texas A&I University, Mr. Garza worked as a high school coach in San Diego, Premont, Mesquite, and Falfurrias; he earned a master's degree in education from East Texas State University in 1967 and returned to Texas A&I in 1971 to serve as an instructor and director of the Upward Bound program; and WHEREAS, A 1976 inductee of the Texas A&I University Athletic Hall of Fame, he became assistant principal at Alice High School in 1983; he later served as principal of Agua Dulce High School and then joined the faculty at Falfurrias High School, where he taught science until he retired; and WHEREAS, This notable Texan has served on the Brooks County ISD Board of Trustees and is chairman of the Boys and Girls Club of Falfurrias; and WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Garza has enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Dora, who coached tennis at Falfurrias; the couple have played tennis together competitively for the past 15 years and recently qualified for the National Senior Games; and WHEREAS, Through his myriad athletic and professional achievements, Mr. Garza has made significant contributions to the field of sports, and he is a source of tremendous pride to his family and the Falfurrias community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Tony Garza on his induction into the National Hispanic Sports Hall of Fame and extend to him best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Garza as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
