R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, With the passing of Leopoldo G. Torres of Raymondville on May 17, 2005, at the age of 84, the State of Texas lost a renowned master craftsman and a dedicated family man, and we join his many admirers in mourning their loss; and WHEREAS, One of the nation's most accomplished bootmakers, Mr. Torres first learned the intricacies of his craft in Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, and throughout his career his work was characterized by high standards of workmanship; and WHEREAS, It was also in Leon that he met and married his wife, Josefa, and their long and happy union produced a fine family that grew to include 14 children, 33 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren during his lifetime; and WHEREAS, After mastering the art of bootmaking while working for others, Mr. Torres, in 1971, founded Torres Boot Company, which quickly became famous for the excellence of its custom-made footwear; and WHEREAS, Among his many satisfied customers were South Texas sheriffs, King Ranch cowboys, New York filmmakers, foreign royals, and numerous law enforcement officials; and WHEREAS, His two most famous clients were accomplished horsemen with distinctly different styles, but Mr. Torres brought the same painstaking attention to detail to the creation of the polo boots he made for Prince Charles as he did to the fashioning of cowboy boots for President Ronald Reagan; and WHEREAS, For a quarter-century, the Torres name was synonymous with the best traditions of bootmaking, and through his undisputed mastery of this craft, Mr. Torres secured a reputation for excellence that drew people to Raymondville from all over the world; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of Leopoldo G. Torres and extend sincere sympathy to his family and to his many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Leopoldo G. Torres.
