R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, For the second consecutive year, the USA girls' soccer team has captured the championship title and trophy in the finals of the six-country 2005 Copa Coca-Cola International tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida; and WHEREAS, Coca-Cola created Copa Coca-Cola in Mexico in 1998, establishing tournament play among teenage soccer teams from Mexico and South America; in 2001, the tournament expanded to the United States, and since its inception, more than 10,000 teams and 600,000 teens from the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia have participated; and WHEREAS, One of the most far-reaching youth soccer programs in the world, the Copa Coca-Cola provides a platform for boys and girls ranging in ages from 13 to 15 to compete in a world-class sports event; this year alone, Copa Coca-Cola tournaments were held in 18 countries, providing free access to the sport for more than 200,000 young people; and WHEREAS, After beating out teams from nine other U.S. cities in the national competition for the privilege of representing the United States, the USA girls' team gave a brilliant showing throughout the prestigious four-day international youth soccer tournament; these remarkable young athletes faced off with Mexico in three rounds in a tournament series, losing the first game 1-2, clinching a tie in the second round, and winning 6-0 in the final match to send the series into penalty kicks, which the USA girls' team won 3-0; and WHEREAS, Demonstrating the talent, athleticism, and commitment to excellence of true champions, these phenomenal young ladies are a source of tremendous pride to their families and their supporters in the Houston community, and the memory of this achievement will undoubtedly remain with the players and their fans for many years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate the USA girls' soccer team from Houston on winning the Copa Coca-Cola International tournament and extend to the players and coaches best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
