H.R. No. 150
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Tragedy was averted in Mineola when firefighters
saved the lives of 12-year-olds Emily Strickland and Elizabeth
Burge after the youths were swept down a storm drain following a
flash flood; and
WHEREAS, The girls were rescued by members of the Mineola
Fire Department, including David Sinches, Scott Melvin, Mark Hooks,
Javier Ortega, Jamie Davlin, and Skip Hortman, each of whom was
instrumental in saving the youngsters from drowning; and
WHEREAS, Fire chief David Stevenson expressed appreciation
for the firefighters' quick thinking and fast action, while also
expressing his gratitude that all involved in the swift water
rescue emerged from the perilous ordeal without serious injury; and
WHEREAS, This incident offers an opportunity to pay tribute
to the members of the Mineola Fire Department for their bravery in
the line of duty; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas
Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend the Mineola Fire
Department for its role in the heroic rescue of Emily Strickland and
Elizabeth Burge and honor these dedicated public servants for
willingly placing themselves in harm's way to safeguard their
fellow Texans; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the Mineola Fire Department as an expression of high
regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
