H.R. No. 180R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Lone Star State has long benefited from a strong banking system, and Texas' state-chartered banks have played a critical role in the state's economic prosperity; and WHEREAS, The Texas Department of Banking--which was created 100 years ago as part of the Department of Agriculture, Insurance, Statistics, and History and approved by the 29th Texas Legislature--has helped ensure that state-chartered banks conduct their business in a safe and sound manner; and WHEREAS, The first banks chartered under the Texas State Bank Law came into existence in August 1905, when the population of the state was 3.4 million; and WHEREAS, Over the course of the past century, the state's banking industry has successfully survived and recovered from two major banking crises, the Great Depression and the Boom-to-Bust days of the 1980s; through it all, Texas bankers have helped usher in dramatic changes in banking practices in the state, both to better meet the financial needs of Texans and to provide citizens with a greater range of services, and they remain committed to serving the financial interests of their fellow Texans during the next 100 years; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate and express appreciation to all of Texas' state-chartered banks for their contributions to the Texas economy and the Texas Department of Banking for a century of outstanding service; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Texas bankers and the Texas Department of Banking as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives to be visibly posted at banking offices throughout the state and the agency's main office.
