R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, In recognition of his exemplary efforts to empower the Latino community, Alonzo Cantu is being awarded the Medallion of Excellence for Community Service at the 28th Annual Gala of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in Washington, D.C., on September 14, 2005; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cantu began his successful career in the building industry in 1978, and for the past two decades he has guided Alonzo Cantu Construction, Inc., based in McAllen, as president and CEO; he also serves as chairman of the board of Lone Star National Bank, a Hispanic-owned financial institution, and is a partner in the group that owns the 142-bed Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, in Edinburg; and WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Cantu has given substantial support to VAMOS (the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships), which awards grants to deserving Hispanic students and also assists them through a mentoring program; and WHEREAS, An important figure in Democratic politics for many years, Mr. Cantu has rendered valuable support to candidates at all levels of government, as well as to students of the political process; and WHEREAS, Through the years, this esteemed gentleman has diligently worked to improve the quality of life for Latinos in South Texas by providing affordable housing, developing health care facilities, and expanding educational opportunities for talented students, and his contributions to the people of the Valley are deeply appreciated; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby congratulate Alonzo Cantu on his receipt of the Medallion of Excellence for Community Service from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute and extend to him sincere gratitude for his exceptional service to his community and his state; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Cantu as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
