R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed will serve as guest speaker at the Mary McLeod Bethune Recognition Program on September 24, 2005, bringing her experience, expertise, and student-centered leadership for the benefit of those in attendance at this special event; and WHEREAS, The fifth president of Bethune-Cookman College, and the first woman to hold that office since founder Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune established the school in 1931, Dr. Reed recently celebrated her one-year anniversary as school president; and WHEREAS, Dr. Reed's resume is truly impressive and includes positions with the Council of Independent Colleges, UNCF, and the United Methodist Foundation of the General Council of Finance and Administration; moreover, she served 18 years as a senior level administrator with the United Methodist Church, during which time she oversaw numerous important initiatives; and WHEREAS, This esteemed educator holds a bachelor's degree in sociology and a master of science in social work from The University of Texas at Austin; she has also earned a master's and a doctoral degree in adult and higher education from Columbia University; and WHEREAS, A former member of the U.S. President's White House Advisory Board for Historically Black Colleges, Dr. Reed was a tenured professor at Columbia College of South Carolina from 1994 to 1998 and also served as dean of the Leadership Institute; in addition, she taught in the doctoral program at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, and in the master's conflict resolution program at Antioch University in Ohio; and WHEREAS, During her tenure as the first woman president of Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas, Dr. Reed broke all school fund-raising records, a tribute to her visionary leadership and magnetic personality; already, she has demonstrated a clearly defined plan for the future of Bethune-Cookman College, and she will undoubtedly continue to achieve greatness in all her pursuits; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 79th Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby recognize Dr. Trudie Kibbe Reed on her selection as guest speaker at the Mary McLeod Bethune Recognition Program and commend her for her myriad accomplishments in the field of education; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Reed as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
